How to Travel with a Pet on United Airlines?

United Airlines has created a generous and easy-to-follow pet policy for its customers traveling with their furry friends. United allows its customers to bring their pets along while traveling on the airline's flights. Passengers may bring small domesticated cats and dogs on board its flights that can fit in a travel carrier underneath the front seat. These are called in-cabin pets. It is suggested to go through United's pet policy to avoid any unexpected situation at the airport gate, security check- points, or on the flight.

Important Guidelines for Pet Travel

  • Puppies and kittens traveling on domestic United flight tickets must be at least 2 months old, while they must be at least 4 months old traveling on international flights due to rabies vaccination requirements.
  • Pets aren't allowed to travel with unaccompanied minors on any United flights.
  • Passengers can bring an additional pet aboard the flights but with an extra ticket and pay an additional $125 each way. The pet must remain on the floor space under the seat always.
  • Pets will be allowed to travel with United's PetSafe Program if they don't fit in the pet carrier.
  • Pets must travel on the same flights as their owners.
  • Oxygen service won't be available for the pet in case of an emergency.

Pet Carrier Dimensions and Guidelines

  • All pets must be carried in an approved hard-sided or soft-sided carrier/kennel.
  • The hard-sided pet carrier must be 17.5” long x 12” wide x 7.5” high (44 cm x 30 cm x 19 cm).
  • The soft-sided pet carrier must be 18” long x 11” wide x 11” high (46 cm x 28 cm x 28 cm).
  • Only one pet per carrier is allowed on United flights.
  • Pet must be able to stand up and turn around comfortably in the pet carrier.

Pet Carrier Requirements

  • Customers can bring small domestic cats and dogs on board the United flights.
  • The pet must stay in their carrier/kennel closed at all times while in the airport, at the boarding area, and while on board the plane.
  • The pet carrier/kennel must stay underneath the seat in front of the passenger.
  • Pet must not be ill, violent, or in any physical distress.
  • When a United customer arrives at the airport with their pet, they need to check in with a United customer service executive to get a bright yellow bag tag to attach to the pet's kennel.
